South Asia earthquake death toll rises in Afghanistan, Pakistan

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck northeast Afghanistan at 1:39 p.m. local time Monday afternoon (5:09 a.m. EDT), killing at least 283 people.

The earthquake was centered about 28 miles south-southwest of Jarm, Afghanistan, and about 159 miles north-northeast of the Afghan capital of Kabul.
