Three quakes, all above magnitude six, have hit Italy's central Apennines region in just two months. One expert said Sunday's quake and the other recent tremors were typical for that territory. The area is crossed by the Apennine Mountains and considered to be of high-seismic risk. Scientists say the Apennines are subjected to a sort of "stretching" activity, a tension pulling the mountain chain apart.
