Is Japan trying to broaden its influence across Asia?

maxresdefaultMyanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi is on a five-day trip to Japan, as she tries to encourage investment in her country, where the infrastructure has been devastated after 50 years of military rule. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe promised $7.7 billion, to be invested over five years. While Japan has a track record of investing in Myanmar, previous amounts have been much smaller. Though Myanmar seeks to be independent of global powers, many believe Japan is trying to counteract China's ties to other key Asian countries, such as the Philippines. Song Qingrun from the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, Takesato Watanabe from Doshisha University and former Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Myanmar Priscilla Clapp discuss Japan's intentions driving its investment in Myanmar.
